Board of Education Vacancy & Election
Three Roaring Fork Schools Board of Education seats will be up for election on November 5, 2019:
- District B (currently held by Matt Hamilton) for a four year term
- District C (currently held by Mary Elizabeth Geiger) for a four year term
- District D (currently held by Shane Larson) for a four year term
Those interested in running for the school board must be a registered voter of the district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election. The candidate must live in the district that he or she runs to represent.
Starting on August 7 (and not beforehand), candidates may pick up a nomination packet and circulate their nomination petitions for signatures. Please check the district Board of Education webpage for details on locations and time. Candidates must file a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors from throughout the school district. Additionally, candidates must submit a written notice of intention to be a candidate and other official paperwork. All documents must be filed by August 30, 2019.
Board member Matt Hamilton announced his resignation in May. At the June 12 board meeting, members posed the question about whether to fill the vacancy so close to the election. Some members felt that all director districts deserved representation without interruption. Others felt that the focus should be on encouraging candidates to run in the open election in November. In a compromise decision, the board decided to proceed on the assumption that they will appoint somebody to fill the open seat but left open the option of leaving the vacancy until November to be decided by voters should multiple highly qualified candidates apply. The board and district leadership agree that the top priority is getting strong community leaders to run for and serve on the board through the election process.
